OUR MISSION
mission
Our mission is simple, we want to affect pawsitive change in the lives of stray, feral, and community cats through TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) and, when sick or ill, to cover the cost of small medical bills. We would also like to raise funds to help transport friendly strays from the streets of Houston to their forever homes whenever possible.
why?
Research shows that TNR, if effectively carried out, aids in stabilizing a cat colony, keeping the cats healthier and safer, and ultimately aids in the gradual decline of the cat colony over time. At least one study, by Gunther et al, titled "Reduction of free-roaming cat population requires high-intensity neutering in spatial contiguity to mitigate compensatory effects" and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (2022) shows that a TNR rate of 70% of the cats in a colony is effective at reducing the number of cats. Alley Cats shares a lot of success stories from effective TNR in the US and abroad. You can read more about TNR here.
Currently, the only option at the moment for a lot of injured or sick street cats is to take them to kill shelters which do not have the resources to provide for their medical care and where the likely outcome is euthanasia. Oftentimes, the medical issue maybe something minor such as a burst abscess, or a part of a tail which needs amputation, or mange - all treatable with a little time and not a reason why a cat should lose its life. We are a small 501(c)3 organization which hopes to address this issue for street cats.
